As I type this, it is -34 degrees celsius, but with the windchill it feels like -44 here in Edmonton, Alberta! Yikes! Needless to say, our province is under an extreme cold warning and we are being told to stay indoors as much as we can. 

Now, usually this is the time of year that I would complain about how cold it is outside and how I can’t leave my home; BUT this year, I’m embracing the conditions and even taking advantage of the cold weather! No, that doesn’t mean that I actually like the weather (because I really don’t, especially the brutal cold wind and those icy road conditions- OMG!), however I know that I can’t change the weather, so I might as well embrace it. 

Before I share my tips on how I have been hitting that refresh button on my body and soul this winter, I have to tell you the story behind it.

It all started last summer; I had plans to organize my home during the summer break, since my older three children would be home from school for an entire two months and therefore they could keep my toddler busy while I sorted out the house (which was in dire need of a good clean!). However, what happened instead was that we ended up going on a few road trips and exploring our city, leaving me no time to organize and clean the home beyond my daily cleaning schedule. 

Suddenly, it was the last week of August and I realised that I hadn’t got much done in terms of cleaning, due to the fact that we were always outdoors and taking in nature and all its beauty. It really was an epic summer and I’m so happy I got to experience it with my children! Of course, the last week of August means getting ready for back to school season for our family, so I was busy with that and still hadn’t organzed the home much. 

Then came September, and we had great weather then as well! In fact, up until now (January), we had warmer than usual temperatures during the fall and the start of winter. The kids and I spent most of our time outdoors during the fall, going on family walks and visiting the parks. In November and December, we went sledding and ice skating, and made snow forts and snow people. But guess what? I still hadn’t organized my home to the extent I wanted to- oops! 

A couple of weeks ago, the temperature started to drop, so it was the perfect time to finally start sorting through the home and organizing it- finally! So you see, while the warmer temperatures kept me outside of the home and had me exploring nature with my family, the colder temperatures have motivated me to stay indoors and organize my home, and to also set the refresh button on my life. 

Going out in nature and getting fresh air has major benefits for both our physical and mental health, so I’m glad we are able to do this and enjoy it as a family. However, I know that it is also important to slow down, organize my home and my life, and to re-evaluate my intentions, which is what I have been doing lately.  If you would like to do the same this winter, then keep reading, as I will be sharing my tips on how you can also take this time to renew and restore your energy this winter!

Renew your intentions

I find that I have more time to myself during the winter months and my days are less busy, so it’s a great time to think about my intentions and to re-evaluate my purpose in life. Writing down your life reflections can be done through journaling; it’s a great way to visually see what you have learned during the past few months and to also see where you are headed in life. 


Take a pause and think about whether or not you are on the right track, if so then keep going! If you find yourself off track, this is a great time to think about how you can change your life for the better and to start taking steps towards positive change!


Take it easy

Sometimes, it feels good to not have any plans and to just stay indoors and take it easy! After our busy summer and being outdoors often, it feels relaxing to just be inside my home and have days where I have nothing planned. 


Exercise and eat healthy

We tend to get the most cardio in during the warmer days through hikes and walks, but you can also get your heart pumping with some at home workouts! There are a ton of free workout videos out there and some great paid fitness services that can guide you in the comfort of your own home. It’s been easier for me to be more consistent with my exercises this winter, as I have been staying indoors more often and therefore finding more time to get in my workouts from home!


Not only am I getting my workouts in this winter, but I have been eating better too! Soups have been my go-to and I tend to load them with veggies.


Relax and unwind in the evenings! 

One of the best perks about winter is that the kids go to bed earlier, which gives me more time for myself during the evening. I use this time to drink some warm tea, prayer, engage in some relaxing breathing exercises,  and listen to inspirational talks via Youtube and podcasts. 


Pursue your hobbies and learn new skills

Winter is a great time to pursue your indoor hobbies, or to learn new skills via online courses! For example, these chilly days are great for wrapping yourself in a blanket and reading a book, or experimenting in the kitchen and coming up with new recipes. 


Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill? Why not take the first step and enroll yourself in an online course before the busyness of summer starts! These days, there are so many online courses available from business to art related courses, which I love because that means you don’t have to leave your home to learn something new!


Create an inspirational indoor space

Having that one space in your home that brings you peace is essential! For me, I realised that one of the reasons why I love summer is because of the trees and the plants; so the inspirational space in my home has lots of plants, in addition to inspirational quotes that are a reminder of my purpose.


Don’t forget to declutter and organize your home, as doing so will bring more peace to your mind and provide you with more clarity. 


Connect with others

It can be difficult to stay in touch with loved ones during winter, as the weather can prevent people from leaving their homes. However, it is still important to keep in contact with your friends and family members, which can be done via phone calls, text, and with social media.
